Winter Trips and Classes
January 2007

Greetings!

Welcome to Winter in the Ozarks. The water temp has dropped in our local diving holes and most divers have put their gear away for the winter. The good news is that the visibility has cleared up. Those of us who are diving now say this is the best time of the year to be diving.

Those divers who want to keep learning through the winter months can sign up for non-diving classes. Those that what to continue to dive can dive locally or travel with us on our long weekend getaways to north Florida.

Non Diving Classes
Equipment Specialist
Do you want to know more about equipment repairs, and maintainance? Bring your gear in for this class and learn better ways to rinse, clean and do minor repairs on your own equipment. Look in depth at other equipment to see different and more technical gear. Sign up for these classes and see Dive Rites NEW Optima Rebreather. How it works, and why you should be diving a rebreather. Rebreathers are the future in the dive industry.

Non Diving Classes
Enriched Air Class
Here is PADI's #1 Specialty. Learn to dive with elevated O2 levels to reduce nitrogen absorbtion. PADI made this class easier this year by removing the dives from this class. One Nitrox tank will be available for your use when you want it. Dive with the Big Dogs, get off of the porch and start new adventures. February's Specialty of the Month.

Medical Corner
Medicine and Diving
Otic Barotruama - a real pain in the ear! Going too deep too fast can cause painful ear problems including pressure build-up that could rupture the ear drum. After diving you may have ringing, numbness, and decreased hearing it the affected ear. This is caused by bruising to the ear drum and fluid building up behind it after the excess pressure has cleared. These changes can take several days, even weeks to return to normal. Avoid this by equalizing your ears early and often, and good buoyancy control to prevent rapid descents. As soon as you notice discomfort stomp and ascend a few feet to where the pain goes away and try to clear that ear again. Reverse barotrauma can occur when your ear won't equalize on ascent. This is usually due to decongestant medications that wear off while you are in the water. If this happens, descend to a depth that stops the pain and wait a while before slowly trying to ascend. Check with your doctor if you have any persistent problems with your ears after diving.
